This is a program run for NIST by the NRC, which recommends candidates for associateships
following a competition based on academic achievement, letters of recommendation, and a brief,
original research proposal. Associateships are awarded for a two year period to applicants within
five years of their Ph.D. There are two competitions annually. The deadlines for applications are
February 1st and August 1st of each year, with notifications in March and September, respectively.
For the February Review, the postdoc can begin working at NIST between July and December.
For the August Review, work can begin between January and June.
This program is open to U.S. citizens only. The essential first step in applying for an NRC Associateship
in the CNST is to contact a staff member to discuss
what research opportunities are available. Visit the Research Associateship Program
website for application
forms and further information.
Frequently, appointments for scientists with recent PhDs are available for two year periods within the CNST. These appointments are independent of the NRC program described above, but may require specific skills and experience. These appointments are also limited to U.S. citizens. They may be offered throughout the year. Resumes should be sent to the staff member most closely associated with the research you are interested in.
Current Post-Doctoral Opportunities:We regularly host postdocs who work as part of collaborative research programs between the CNST and a university, national laboratory, or corporation. These postdocs perform their research at NIST, but interact with a larger group of scientists. These appointments are independent of the NRC program described above, but may require specific skills and experience. These appointments generally do not require U.S. citizenship. They may be offered throughout the year. We keep a file of resumes should opportunities arise. Resumes should be sent to the staff member most closely associated with the research you are interested in.
